coach ankle boots

I have been a long time fan of Coach; long before they became so mainstream, which I'm sure every Coach lover says. With every passing year, their lines becomes more comprehensive and more amazing. This year I am so taken aback by the shoes, specifically the ankle boots!

Style Statement

My first days in my new apartment have been, well, exciting. I was looking forward to this for many years and although I was a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of being on my own and all the responsibility I am taking on, it's rather enjoyable. Tonight I have been reading through a new book that I picked up call Style Statement. Love it! It came to me as a fabulous recommendation from a friend. It's a multi-faceted approach to defining (though that may be too strict a word) that real you through reflection.

As I have been reading through the book so far, I couldn't help by harken back to this past weekend that I was able to spend with my mom. Not only did she come all this way just to help me move, she helped me clean and decorate. I often feel that in stressful times like that I would lost without her elegance. In the process of physically moving me, she also helped to move me to a new place in the looser sense of the word.

Our weekend was filled with conversations about our passions and hopes for the coming years. As I spoke about my ever-changing future plans she said something so honest that I am continuously struck by it. "I think part of the reason why I have not gone back to work or to school even, is because I really don't know what it is I want. That has led me to be too afraid to make a choice. I think you're brave for living on your own and doing what you do."

In my lifetime, I've heard so few people over the age of 30 admit that they are lacking direction, let alone admire the way that I live my life. I think that for the most part those who do lack direction manage to hide it in the tedious day-to-day lives that they lead. Structure supersedes any semblance of life. But my family is very different. My parents have been stay-at-home parents since I was in grade five. My dad has gone back to school many times and has pursued whatever his interests have evolved to. This model has led me to embrace pursuing what it is that I want, and not what I think I want. This all perfectly coincides with Style Statement. Beautiful words and photos to inspire, but above all to lead you to you.

moving day

I have moved to my new flat! It's been a very exciting couple of days unpacking and organizing. I'm waiting on a few piece of furniture that I've ordered and I cannot wait until they arrive. My new home has turned out to be everything I ever wanted and more.

Louis Vuitton Vespa

Much to my surprise not only does such a thing exist, it lives down the street from me. It is an undeniably lovely shade of pink with such beautiful leather details.

I know what will be on my Christmas list this year . . .

Chateau Versailles

When I was out for a stroll over the weekend, I was lucky enough to stumble upon the opening of a luxurious new furniture store in Vancouver - Chateau Versailles Furniture Gallery. What a treat is was to meander through the beautiful pieces that filled their showroom. Many gorgeous velvet apolstered headboards and delicate sofas. These are a few of my favourite pieces.

Inspired by the quintessential summer fruit, I topped off the most delicious cupcake recipe I've ever used with homemade strawberry frosting. Could there be anything sweeter?

mantels

The luxury of having a mantel at my new apartment is one of the many architectural pieces that I am looking forward playing up. I have many ideas already - the one that I plan on implementing is a incredible Venetian inspired mirror as a glamorous focal point. This will be complemented by several glass jars and stands as well as my Waterford vase.

Here is my current inspiration board:

things i know

: Stressful situations arise, sometimes in groups. The outcome is not always the most important part. It's about how you handle it.

: Although I am in a place where all that seems to come to mind are questions, it seems like an okay place to be.

: Summertime is a good time to refocus.

: I have the best employers and am so thankful for their support over the last few weeks.

: Weight lifting can be enjoyable.
: So is bonding with new friends.

: It can be hard to know what you value most until you're on the verge of losing it. Seize those times and don't forget what you felt. But don't be driven by the fear.

: I'm extremely afraid of living on my own. In fact, the only part that I'm looking forward to is decorating without having to get anyone else's input or approval.

: Having connections to your past is good, but you shouldn't let them define or direct you in the present

: The only bad decisions are the ones that you don't make.

curated desk sets

Victoria Magazine is one of my favorite publications. Without fail, they deliver page after page of beautiful images and products. In this past issue they featured these gorgeous curated desk sets from Fitzgerald Coleman, which are a delightful chest of cards, postcards and note cards.

Or don't you like to write letters. I do because it's such a swell way to keep from working and yet feel you've done something.

There is a silver lining to bad situations.

This is something that I have been repeating to myself for many weeks. I've been tested in a multitude of ways, which keeps me guessing what might be next. A relationship ending. My dad being in a traumatic car accident. My new work permit not getting approved, which prevented me from being at home with my family (The whining list stops here, I promise). To be honest, I'd never experienced such an intense feeling of alienation from home. It was difficult, and stressful to say the least. I suppose that it is one of the challenges of living abroad that I am fortunate enough to have not experienced before.

But this weekend has restored my faith in time working things out and pushing us forward - in particular Friday night. I made plans to go out with friends, picked out an outfit that I knew would turn my mood around and packed my camera to document it all. But before I made it downtown, JM called to see if I wanted to join him at his house for dinner. It was so wonderful to chat over a crisp white wine and good food. Of all my close friends, I feel like JM and I are typically on the same page and have the ability to comfort one another. Or at least that is the case for me. We talked about our general anxieties of being university graduates, family and all of the things that have brought us closer together over the last four years. There is one piece of the conversation that particularly resonates with me. JM said that the biggest shock has been discovering how resilient I am - it was the least imaginable quality for me to possess when he first met me.

This has to be one of the greatest observations anyone has ever made about me, and at such a pivotal time. In the midst of being immersed in all that has happened lately, I've lost sight of all I've over come and my ability to persevere. But a truly great friend is in my life - just as things seem to be getting unbearable - to remind me of what I am oblivious to. It brings sweet tears to my eyes. He is the most wonderful person I know. He deserves much more gratitude that I am ever able to show.

a place to rest

From RoomService

 From RoomService

From RoomService

I saw an ad for RoomService in Elle Decor this month and knew I had to share the find! I've long been obsessed with (slightly) eccentric chairs. They are a fabulous way to jazz up a room in a way that's functional. RoomService offers a beautiful combination of vintage inspired structures with modern colours. This Newport based store is the creation of a husband/wife team who design most of the furniture themselves and believe that your home should be "your personal fantastic eclectic heaven."

It's furniture designed with passion for the place you feel most passion about - your home.

Another day in interior decorating late for moi. I picked up this beautiful wall hanging from Country Furniture on South Granville this afternoon. I have big plans for this piece. It will be part of a focal point on my living room wall, which is comprised of a couple larger pieces as well as a number of my original photographs. So far, this is what I envision the design to look like -

Nothing bothers me more than void, empty wall space. I like the idea of making displays on walls, which mix a bunch of media. Not only can they be so harmonious, they can be deeply personal. My goal with this one is to perfectly mix colour, texture and depth to create something visually interesting that feels balanced. I'm thinking a floating shelf to set one of the 5x8s on would also be good.

spiraling mirrors

These could only be found in one place - Coco Chanel's apartment.

 {photo}

I find mirrors enchanting, whimsical and glamorous.

As I prepare to move to my new home in a matter of weeks, I've become more enamored than ever with interior decor. I have several binders of images that I've kept over the years. They've come from everywhere and I reference them whenever I'm looking for ideas. Lately I've been taking many decorating cues from fashion spreads that I like. I find it much more interesting to take concepts from fashion and translate them into something else. This will be the first time that I've ever lived by myself and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to decor for myself. I have so many ideas and I can't wait to share photos!

Vacant frames and boxes are the best kind of canvas. They call for creativity and beckon to be filled.

Coloured glassware is one of my favorite things. So when I found these glasses at Farmhouse on South Granville, I knew I had to have them. I love the look of cobalt blue and amber coupled with a fleur de lis design.

Bonjour, again

My blog has been on a bit of a holiday. It has been a month since I last posted and so much has happened in my life. Trust me, you wouldn't believe half of it! I felt that I needed a bit of space to process it all and make a few big decisions with minimal distraction. For the time being, everything appears to be in order and I am very happy to be posting again!

There is so much in store of the coming weeks that I cannot wait to share! I am moving to a new apartment - just for me - and I have many fabulous decorating plans. A new job in the fall. New adventures with new friends. Carving out more history with my old friends.

I've realized that although so much has changed around me, I am still me, just in a new place in my life. For the most part, that is fairly comforting to me as I go forth.

Best wishes for the week!

french bistro kitchen

Lately I've been craving eclectic, vintage inspired spaces and have been trying to think of ways to update a few areas in my home starting with the kitchen. I have this very old wood dining room table with chairs that are about to fall apart. It's been in the family for years, but it's time for a change. I spotted some fabulous bistro tables at Country Furniture a couple weeks ago. This is the one I'm thinking about getting.

It's about half the size of my current table, but I think it's going to be a much better size for the scale of my apartment. Of course there is the ever pressing issue of a chair. I like the idea of something black and sleek.

Wood chairs are also nice. I love the bold, chunky tiles in this kitchen, too.

 {photo}

Does it get any better than this one?! Beautiful, soft colours. Especially those pale pink walls with gorgeous pattern. The long white table complete with glass jars of every size. Low hanging light fixtures. And, I love the white floors! Just fabulous.

 {photo}

For me, the charm of lovely french kitchens lies in the little details. Jars. Little knick knacks. Vintage cookbooks and literature. Touches of metallic and other bits of glamor. Mirrors. Things i look forward to in my redecorating adventures.
